Manfred Mann

He played in Jazz bands on piano from 1959-1961

He moved from Africa to England in 1961, and began writing a jazz column under the name Manfred Manne. Manfred’s real last name is Lubowitz but he used the last name of jazz drummer Shelley Manne for his column and it stuck.

The band that would be called Manfred Mann began as a blues/jazz band, but with encouragement from their record company, they became a commercial rock band, and had some big hits in the U.S. including “Do Wah Diddy Diddy”, “Sha La La”, and “Mighty Quinn”

In the 70’s Mann started Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, and had more hits including Springsteen’s “Blinded by The Light”
